After signing human coke machine John Scott earlier in the day, the Sharks added a forward who brings some skill in addition to his size and toughness by trading a 3rd round pick in 2015 to Philadelphia for Tye McGinn. Via the team:
San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has acquired forward Tye McGinn from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft.
“Tye is a hardworking player who plays an honest game,” said Wilson. “We’re excited to add him to our group of young forwards.”
McGinn, 23, recorded 35 points (20-15=35) and 62 penalty minutes in 54 games with Adirondack of the American Hockey League last season. The Phantoms alternate captain ranked second on the team in goals and third in points. McGinn also tallied four goals and one assist in 18 games with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2013-14.
The six-foot-two, 210-pound native of Fergus, Ontario, has recorded 79 points (46-33=79) and 161 penalty minutes in 163 career AHL games with Adirondack, and has collected seven goals and three assists in 36 career NHL games with Philadelphia. McGinn was originally drafted by the Flyers in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, and is the brother of former Sharks forward Jamie McGinn.
McGinn scored 20 goals in just 54 games for the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL last season and has had two separate 18-game stints in the big leagues with the Flyers over the past two seasons. During the first stint, back in 2012-13, he saw a lot of time on Claude Giroux’s wing and posted sterling puck possession numbers in addition to scoring and drawing penalties at a high rate given his minutes. This past season, when he was generally slotted alongside Brayden Schenn rather than Giroux, McGinn struggled to push play but still ended up potting four even-strength goals despite limited usage.
McGinn is currently a restricted free agent and when the Sharks sign him and fellow RFAs James Sheppard and Tommy Wingels, they’ll have 15 NHL forwards on their roster. It’s possible McGinn spends next season in Worcester but given that the Sharks gave up a 3rd rounder here I’m guessing they have bigger plans than that for the rugged winger. Someone is likely going to be moved out. Ideally, it’ll be Adam Burish but the reality could be a lot harsher than that.
