Ward will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, with a cap hit of $3.275 million. He has a modified no-trade clause. He’ll have 24 hours to submit his six team list and then the veteran forward is fair game.
The 37-year-old has been on injured reserve with a shoulder injury and hasn’t played since February 8 in a loss against the Vegas Golden Knights. The injury will certainly affect his trade value.
Ward has rotated in and out of a fourth-line role this season, with Jannik Hansen, Barclay Goodrow, Marcus Sorensen, and Danny O’Regan. He’s totaled five goals and six assists for eleven points in 46 games. He’s had 35 shots on goal with a shooting percentage of 14.3 percent. It’s not a career high shooting percentage, but it does hold up against his NHL averages: 14.2 percent in four years with the Washington Capitals, 9.4 percent in three years with the Nashville Predators, and 12.9 in his three years with the Sharks.
It looks like the Eric Fehr/Joel Ward reunion will come to an end. Where ever Wardo lands, they’ll be getting an effective fourth liner.
