Logan Couture wants you to stay home

Sharks captain Logan Couture partnered with the city of San Jose to put out this video message on Twitter yesterday afternoon:

“Hi everyone. This is Logan Couture from the San Jose Sharks,” the forward starts, reading from a script off-screen. “We want to keep everyone in Santa Clara County, and around the world, as safe as possible. Please stay at home as much as you possibly can. If you do go out for essential items, please wash your hands for at least 20 seconds when you return home. We are all in this together. Let’s all look out for one another. Thank you.”

The video was posted in the same day that The Mercury News reported that the death toll due to COVID-19 has risen to 42 deaths in Santa Clara County, with more than fifty percent of those occurring within the previous ten days. This marks the county as having the highest percentage of deaths per 100,000 residents out of the five most populated counties in the Bay Area.

Despite early efforts to flatten the curve, there have been over 1,200 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus in Santa Clara County and nearly 4,000 in the Bay Area. Due to the scarcity of tests, however, the actual number of cases may be higher, especially with how long coronavirus has been present in the Bay Area — the first case in Santa Clara County was confirmed on January 31.

As a reminder, the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has put out this list of recommendations for personal protection during this time:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• Avoid social gatherings in groups of more than 10 people, as well as discretionary travel.
• Wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain./
