Quick Bite: Sharks are the Phantom Menace

Well, this was far from the effort we were hoping to see from the Sharks tonight. With yet another chance to clinch a playoff spot, (this time against the bottom-feeding Edmonton Oilers) and losses from both the Kings and Ducks, it was a perfect opportunity for San Jose to get a big two points. The effort needed to pull ahead of the Oilers late in the game was not there for San Jose and it shows in the results.

I’m sure we’re all frustrated, so in honour of Star Wars Night let’s pause for a moment and listen to Rey’s Theme.

Don’t you feel better now? I feel like I could go take on the Oilers myself. Anyway, let’s get to it:

The game got started with some sweet revenge…or whatever. Michael Haley fought Darnell Nurse, who was public enemy number one after his hit on Roman Polak two weeks ago. Tommy Wingels tipped in a Roman Polak shot to get the first goal of the game for San Jose. The Sharks added a power play goal from Joe Pavelski before the period was up, and headed to the locker rooms up 2-0…full of a new hope.

It was all downhill from there. The Oilers struck back, scoring three goals in the first ten minutes of the second period to put themselves in the lead. Patrick Marleau scored again for the Sharks to tie the game up, but San Jose was unable to hold the lead and ended the period with a score of 4-3. Shots were 21-13 for San Jose after two. Jar Jar Reimer?

When I was thinking about how much Star Wars I could fit into this recap, I was hoping I’d be able to go with The Return of the Donskoi for the third period, but, well, he didn’t return (we’ll be keeping an eye out for updates on his status). The Sharks were outshot badly throughout the final period, leading to a fifth goal from Edmonton as well as an empty netter to finish things off.

Let’s just encase this one in carbonite and forget about it.
