Sharks sign 2015 fourth rounder Adam Helewka to entry level deal

San Jose signed WHL forward, and 2015 fourth rounder, Adam Helewka to an entry level deal Thursday. Unlike Jon Martin, who the Sharks signed yesterday, Helewka seems to bring more goals and fewer penalty minutes to the game.

Helewka is currently plying his trade in Red Deer where he leads the team in goals, points per game and is second in points. He is tied for 13th in goals scored despite playing in only 45 games.

Press Release:

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed left wing Adam Helewka (@ahelewka13) to a standard, entry-level contract.

“Adam plays a smart, two-way game, with good instincts in all three zones and can finish,” said Wilson. “He has enjoyed quality development under the watch of Spokane Head Coach Don Nachbaur and now in Red Deer under Head Coach Brent Sutter, and we look forward to his continued growth with our organization.”

Helewka, 20, ranks T-13th in the WHL in goals (34) despite playing in only 45 games. He leads the Red Deer Rebels in goals and points per game (1.36), and ranks second in points (61), and his plus-33 rating leads the team and ranks T-7th in the league. Helewka was named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 10. In addition, he tallied one assist in three AHL games with the San Jose Barracuda.

In 236 career WHL games with Spokane and Red Deer, Helewka has posted 225 points (111 goals, 114 assists), 150 penalty minutes and a plus-48 rating. He has added four goals and four assists in 19 career playoff games. In 2014-15, he was named to the WHL’s West Second All-Star Team, finishing 5th in the league with 44 goals.

The six-foot-two, 200-pound native of Burnaby, British Columbia, was drafted by San Jose in the 2015 NHL Draft (fourth round, 106th overall).
