Video: Joe Thornton giveth, Joe Thornton taketh away

Logan Couture might be back home in Canada but Sharks captain Joe Thornton has still been living it up in the land of cheese and particle accelerators, remaining with HC Davos of the Swiss National League. He’s been involved in particularly eventful games over the past few days, for both good reasons and not-so-good reasons. We’ll start with the positive: a magnificent passing play in a game against the SCL Tigers last Friday. Thornton initiates it by seamlessly threading the needle to Davos forward Dario Bürgler who pays it forward with an equally brilliant feed to Rick Nash for a power play tap-in.

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and a play made by Thornton yesterday in a contest against Jason Spezza’s Rapperswil-Jona Lakers was markedly less brilliant. With the teams scoreless midway through the first period, Thornton’s attempt to block a centering pass by the Lakers’ Franco Collenberg turned into an own-goal that would make Dan Boyle proud:

Luckily for Thornton, he was able to partially redeem himself with a goal and two assists later in the game but Davos still ended up losing the barn-burner 7-6. Thornton and Nash also have to be pretty stoked on their latest reinforcements, fellow NHL All-Star and Dallas Stars winger Loui Eriksson. A top trio of Eriksson, Thornton and Nash could recall the halcyon days of the Sharks’ Burger Line but let’s hope this lockout is resolved before the three get the chance to spend too much time together.
